We have 4 free-fall lander systems on this cruise.  Two of them are baited cameras and two of them are baited traps. All were designed and constructed by Oceanlab.

Hadal-Lander:  This is a full ocean depth rated video camera.  It free-fall to the seabed and takes 1 minute of footage every 5 minutes.  It also has a couple of small amphipod traps and a 2litre water sampler.  It records temperature and dept throughout the 12 hour deployment as well.

Abyssal-Lander:  This is a 6000 metre rated baited still camera that takes an image every 1 minute and recorded temperature, pressure, salinity and current speed throughout.  As it is only 6000 metre rated it will only be used on the ‘shallower’ sites.

Latis:  Latis is a full ocean depth rated baited trap, design specifically for hadal snail-fish and small amphipods, although it did catch the supergiant amphipods as well.  It is baited with two mackerels, one in each of the cages.

Fish-Trap:  This is a 6000 metre rated baited fish trap.  It is much like Latis, but bigger as it designed to catch larger abyssal fish on the plains surrounding the trench.
